You have really checked when you knew beforehand WHAT you were checking – for example “are all the sources correct?” – and then examined it.

Kennst du das?Ever had this?

You do not only glance at the cake, you test the thing named beforehand, whether it is done, and that still does not choose whether you cut it. With a program, you examine the output for a property named beforehand, without yet choosing what happens to it.

DefinitionDefinition

An oversight act in which the overseer examines the object in order to determine whether a property named before the outcome is determined holds for it.

Was es nicht istWhat it is not

Unlike an observation, a check is made against one property named before the outcome is known; unlike a decision, it determines whether something holds, not what is to be done. The everyday or software sense of check, any inspection or automated test, is not meant. Unlike verification in ISO 9000:2015, 3.8.12, no separate body of objective evidence is required. Unlike inspection in ISO 9000:2015, 3.11.7, determination of conformity to specified requirements, the property is named by the overseer for this one act before the outcome, and the outcome may be recorded as undetermined.

Für NormungsgremienFor standards bodies

Source: individual Internet-Draft draft-ehstand-oversight-acts-00 (work in progress; not an IETF standard or IETF consensus document; no IETF standards status), Section 2.5. The predicate includes is_oversight_act. A record with outcome not_performed is not an oversight check. Records that identify an overseer are personal data; where overseers are employees, such records can monitor behaviour or performance and need a legal basis under GDPR Art. 6 and Art. 88 and, in Germany, co-determination under BetrVG § 87(1) No. 6. The record exists to document the oversight act, not to evaluate the overseer.

Für OrganisationenFor organisations

Lets a record show which named property a reviewer actually verified, instead of a bare “reviewed” flag.
