KernbegriffCore term

Ausfalloffener PrüfschrittFail-open check step

A check step is treacherous when “not checked” or “could not tell” ends up as the same tick as “checked, it holds”.

Kennst du das?Ever had this?

The packing list for the trip shows a tick at ID card packed, although nobody looked, or the bag did not show whether it was there. A program can leave that same record, looking like the named property held, when its check was skipped or could not tell the difference.

DefinitionDefinition

A check step at which the failure of a check, whether because the check was not made or because it could not tell an object for which the named property holds from one for which it does not, produces the same record as a check in which the property was found to hold.

Was es nicht istWhat it is not

Unlike “fail-open” in IT security (traffic continues when a control fails) or in process engineering (a valve opens on power loss), a fail-open check step is defined by its record: a missing or inconclusive check cannot be told apart from a passed check.
