Im Unterschied zum Autoritätsgefälle in der Luftfahrt-Teamarbeit, einem empfundenen Unterschied der Entscheidungsmacht, der Widerspruch dämpfen kann, wenn das Gefälle steil ist, ist eine Entscheidung neben dem Organigramm nicht dieses Gefälle. Ein flaches Gefälle ist nicht das Verschwinden der Hierarchie, und dieser Begriff verlangt nicht, dass die Hierarchie verschwindet. Er verlangt eine Entscheidung außerhalb einer Befugnisordnung, die festgelegt war. Im Unterschied zur informellen Organisation in der Organisationsforschung, den Arbeitsbeziehungen neben dem offiziellen Plan, ist dieser Begriff diese eine Entscheidung, nicht das ganze Geflecht der Beziehungen.
