Worte ohne BegreifenWords without grasp
Earlier working name: The Glass Wall Effect
You can read the answer and understand the words, and you still do not grasp the content.
Kennst du das?Ever had this?
You read the explanation in the club guide and know every word, and you still do not grasp the content. With artificial intelligence it is the same gap between the words you read and grasping the answer.
DefinitionDefinition
The state in which a person can see and read a response from artificial intelligence, understands its words, and does not grasp its content.
Was es nicht istWhat it is not
Unlike the illusion of explanatory depth, the feeling of understanding a mechanism more deeply than one does (Rozenblit and Keil, 2002), this state is a grasp that fails while the words are understood, not an overestimate of one's understanding. Unlike glass walls, a name used in organizational research for lateral barriers between kinds of work, this state is not a career barrier. Unlike fluency blindness, it is not a lower check rate for more fluent outputs. The source does not require the response to be wrong. The term is not a finding about reading ability, language proficiency or cognitive disability, and it is not used to assess, grade or rank a person.

Related literature: the illusion of explanatory depth (Rozenblit and Keil, 2002); glass walls, a name used in organizational research for lateral barriers between kinds of work. No conformity to those works is claimed. This record evaluates an identified person's performance, reliability or ability and is profiling under GDPR Art. 4(4); in employment or education it needs a legal basis under Art. 6 and Art. 88 and, in Germany, co-determination under BetrVG § 87(1) No. 6 and § 94, and it must not be the sole basis of a decision about that person (Art. 22). It does not assess, rank or diagnose the person, is not an assessment of competence, honesty or authorship, and is not for assessing individuals; prefer pseudonymised or aggregated records.
Für OrganisationenFor organisations
Names the case in which a person can read a response and understand its words without grasping its content.
