KernbegriffCore term

ScheinkonsensPhantom consensus

You take matching answers as independent confirmations, and one named thing they all depend on accounts for that match.

Kennst du das?Ever had this?

In your family three people say the same thing about the trip because they all read the same note, and you take that as three independent confirmations. The same named thing all three depend on accounts for the match.

DefinitionDefinition

The reading of matching outputs as independent confirmation when a named shared dependency accounts for the match.

Was es nicht istWhat it is not

Unlike a consensus protocol, a stated procedure for reaching agreement, and unlike a Byzantine fault, in which a participant can present inconsistent messages, phantom consensus is the reading of matching outputs as independent confirmation when a named shared dependency accounts for the match. Unlike groupthink, pressure toward a shared view, the match need not come from social pressure. Unlike the false-consensus effect (Ross, Greene and House, 1977), which is overestimating how many share one's own view, this term concerns the independence of outputs, not the estimated spread of that view. Unlike swarm sycophancy, conformity of two or more agent outputs to an earlier position, with an objection in the same record left unaddressed, is not required.

Source: SWAMANITAI conceptual working definition SWA26-0005. Consensus protocols and the Byzantine fault are established neighbouring terms in distributed systems; groupthink is the neighbouring term for pressure toward a shared view. The false-consensus effect (Ross, Greene and House, 1977) is the neighbouring term for overestimating how many share one's own view. No conformity to a named standard is claimed.

Für OrganisationenFor organisations

Names the case in which matching outputs are read as independent confirmation when a named shared dependency accounts for the match.
