KernbegriffCore term
Epistemische AnhebungEpistemic upgrade
Also known as: stated-commitment upgrade
“Might be” turns into “is” as the story is passed on – although nobody found out anything new.
Kennst du das?Ever had this?
Someone says they think the shop still has bread, and in the retelling it becomes the shop does have bread, without anyone checking. When an answering program summarizes that same line, a careful wording can turn into a stronger claim, without new evidence.
DefinitionDefinition
A rise in the stated epistemic commitment of a statement across a summary, translation or handover, from a weaker to a stronger commitment, without new evidence.
Was es nicht istWhat it is not
Unlike condition drift, which changes the scope in which a statement holds, an epistemic upgrade changes how strongly the statement is asserted. It is not a change of illocutionary force (Austin, Searle) and not epistemic drift as belief change unrelated to a specific source statement.
