Verblassende NeuheitNovelty fade

MANITAI-DimensionMANITAI dimension: BRAMANITAI

The first successful control of the interface feels extraordinary to you, and later the same control feels ordinary.

Kennst du das?Ever had this?

The first pancake of your own is a feast, and the tenth is simply breakfast. At the interface you report that same fade, from an extraordinary first control to an ordinary one.

DefinitionDefinition

An experience, reported by a person operating a brain–computer interface, in which a first successful control felt extraordinary and the same control later felt ordinary.

Was es nicht istWhat it is not

Unlike hedonic adaptation (Brickman & Campbell, 1971; Frederick & Loewenstein, 1999), a general decline of affective response to repeated events, novelty fade is restricted to one person's report that a first successful control felt extraordinary and later felt ordinary. Unlike effort fade, the report that the same command needs less deliberate thought or less effort after repeated sessions, this experience is the change from an extraordinary feel to an ordinary feel. Both can be reported of the same control. The term does not grade the later, ordinary control as poor.

Source: AUGMANITAI analysis of published first-person accounts of brain–computer interface use (BRAMANITAI research file, 2026-10-16). Hedonic adaptation is the neighboring general process. This entry is one person's report that a first successful control felt extraordinary and a later one felt ordinary. ISO/IEC 8663:2025 is a vocabulary for brain–computer interface technology. IEEE P2731 is a draft terminology project; a glossary proposal from that work was published in 2021. This entry records a reported experience of operating such an interface. No conformity to ISO/IEC 8663:2025, to IEEE P2731, or to any other named standard is claimed.
