You cannot tell if two AI agents are the same one. Shared memory or the same operator identity can count. A shared base model cannot.
Kennst du das?Ever had this?
At the club stall someone serves you twice in the same shirt. You cannot tell if it is one person, a twin, or someone with the same notebook. The shirt alone does not settle it. With AI, a shared base model is like that shirt.
DefinitionDefinition
The state in which a person or an agent cannot determine whether two encountered agents of artificial intelligence are the same entity or distinct entities. Grounds for sameness are shared memory or the same identity assigned by the operator. A shared foundation model alone is not enough.
Was es nicht istWhat it is not
Unlike AI identity in Otsuka, Toyoda, and Leung (2026), the relationship between what an agent is declared to be and what it is observed to do, this state is not that relationship. Unlike an entity binding failure (arXiv:2606.30531), the case in which an agent selects a fitting tool and still acts on the wrong external entity, this state is not that mis-binding. Unlike a Sybil attack (Douceur, 2002), in which one entity presents many identities, this state is the open judgment of a person or an agent and is not that attack. Unlike agent identity persistence, the state in which one agent remains recognizable across sessions by specified features of its behavior or of its configuration, this state is the unsettled question whether two encountered agents are the same entity or distinct entities. Unlike a fluid entity, the state of a named composite of one person and artificial components in which the components change while the name, the stated intention, the recorded register of the changes to the components, the authority levels, and the fixed identifiers stay, this state is not that composite. Unlike scattered swarm memory, the state in which stored information relevant to one task is spread across separate stores and cannot be retrieved together, this state is not that spread. Unlike a clone echo, the unexpected effect in a person's physical surroundings of an externalized artifact of that person without that person having triggered it, this state is not that effect. A shared foundation model alone is not a ground for sameness.

RegelnRules
- Record the observer, whether a person or an agent, the two encountered agents, and that the observer's judgment of sameness is open.
- Do not record a shared foundation model alone as sameness, do not record a determined same-or-distinct result as this state, and do not record a criterion as if it were a fact.

Source: AUGMANITAI coinage (ENTMANITAI, 2026-10-16). AI identity in Otsuka, Toyoda, and Leung (2026, arXiv:2604.23280) is the relationship between what an agent is declared to be and what it is observed to do. An entity binding failure (arXiv:2606.30531) is action on the wrong external entity. A Sybil attack (Douceur, 2002) is one entity presenting many identities. Grounds for sameness in this term are shared memory or the same identity assigned by the operator. A shared foundation model alone is not enough. The field sameness_undetermined records the open judgment, not a criterion as a fact. Agent identity persistence, the fluid entity, scattered swarm memory, and the clone echo are neighbouring terms in this vocabulary. No conformity to a named standard is claimed.
Für OrganisationenFor organisations
Names the case in which a person or an agent cannot determine whether two encountered agents of artificial intelligence are the same entity or distinct entities, where grounds for sameness are shared memory or the same identity assigned by the operator, and a shared foundation model alone is not enough.
