The interface makes an output you did not mean as a command, and it was not some other command you did mean.
Kennst du das?Ever had this?
You murmur something at the table, and someone passes you the salt, which you did not mean. At the interface you report the same when an output arrives that you did not mean as a command.
DefinitionDefinition
An experience, reported by a person operating a brain–computer interface, in which the interface produced an output which that person had not meant as a command and which did not match another command that person had meant.
Was es nicht istWhat it is not
Unlike a false positive, a technical count of outputs during intended non-control, and unlike the Midas touch problem (Jacob, 1990), a design problem of unintended activation, an unmeant output is the person's report of an output they did not mean as a command. Surprise is not required. Unlike meant–done distance, the distance on a stated scale from zero to one between what one person meant by one instruction and what one agent carried out, this experience is not that distance and does not require an instruction to an agent. Unlike the sense of agency (Gallagher, 2000), the sense that one is the author of an action, this term does not decide who the author is.

RegelnRules
- Record the person, the output event, that the output was not meant as a command, and whether it matched another command the person had meant.
- Do not store decoded words, text, or signal content in the output reference, and do not require surprise.

Meant–done distance in this vocabulary, the false positive, the Midas touch problem (Jacob, 1990), and the sense of agency (Gallagher, 2000) are the neighboring terms. This entry is the reported output that was not meant as a command. Unintended outputs can reveal private mental content; records hold no decoded content. ISO/IEC 8663:2025 is a vocabulary for brain–computer interface technology. IEEE P2731 is a draft terminology project; a glossary proposal from that work was published in 2021. This entry records a reported experience of operating such an interface. No conformity to ISO/IEC 8663:2025, to IEEE P2731, or to any other named standard is claimed.
Für OrganisationenFor organisations
